The Center for Optics Research and Engineering (CORE,http://www.core.sdu.edu.cn), Shandong University, Qingdao, China, is a newly established research center dedicated to the field of optical physics and applications in precision measurement, optical oceanography and exploring, and biomedical science. Located in the beautiful ocean-side city of Qingdao in the Shandong province we invite applications for tenured/tenure-track faculty and postdoctoral positions in the fields of experimental precision measurement/metrology, optical physics and related material science disciplines, deep-sea optical oceanography and exploring, and optical biomedical science. Established in 2011, CORE initially focused on optical material science and infrared technology. In light of it’s past success, the University recently decided to significantly expand the Center’s operation to encompass broad research fields covering optical material science, nano/micro optical devices, micro-cavity/micro-chip based optical physics, precision metrology and measurements, quantum optics, optical oceanic applications, and optical/optoelectronic applications in biomedical science. We seek internationally renowned scientists, senior level research fellows, and excellent entry-level young researchers from diverse areas of experimental optical material physics, optical physics, atomic physics, quantum optics and optical engineering, deep-sea exploring, and light interaction with biomedical and biological systems such as brain and central nervous systems research using optical methods (3-4 MDs in optical biomedical science). During this next phase of enhancement, the center has a number of faculty positions (tenured and tenure-track faculty members), and around 10 postdoctoral positions open for applications.
Positions and Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional candidates for all levels of faculty positions, including distinguished chair professors, tenured full/associate professors, as well as tenure-track assistant professors. Candidates seeking senior positions should have Ph.D/M.D. in a relevant discipline, an outstanding record of research accomplishments and the capability to lead an independent research group. Candidates seeking junior level positions should have Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, demonstrate strong initiative for new research projects, and be capable of leading independent research efforts. All positions will be commensurate with individual’s research experience and research accomplishments.
We are also seeking qualified candidates for postdoctoral positions. Candidates should have Ph.D. in a relevant discipline or expect a Ph.D. within one year, with a substantive record of research accomplishments, and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty members in the center. Prospective applications are strongly encouraged to communicate with the center’s administrative office for research directions and information about prospective advisors (http:// www.core.sdu.edu.cn)
Salary and Benefits
All newly hired faculty members will be offered competitive startup resources and office/lab spaces. Annual salaries for faculty positions are very competitive with top research universities in China. Annual salary for a distinguished chair professor appointment is to be separately negotiated in each case. Shandong University provides employees with an attractive benefits package including family relocation, housing and spouse re-employment assistance.
Postdoctoral fellows will be provided with competitive annual stipends based on the individual’s experience and research performance. Housing subsidies will also be provided.
To Apply
Applicants for a faculty position should send full curriculum vitae, copies of 5 key publications in the past five years, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of research togxzx@sdu.edu.cn. Applications for postdoctoral positions should be directly addressed to the center’s administrative office.
About CORE: The Center for Optics Research and Engineering (CORE) in Shandong University was established in 2011 as a major initiative of Shandong University to significantly enhance its specialty in optical physics. The new University initiative includes consolidating all sections and divisions of CORE into a single location in the beautiful coastal city of Qingdao, with a new dedicated research facility to be completed in 2020 (currently, about 3000 square meters research space is available). CORE is committed to academic excellence by investing in cutting-edge research in the broad area of optical physics and advanced optical materials, with the key addition and enhancement on precision metrology, quantum optics, atomic physics, micro-cavity/micro-chip based optical device research, and applications of optical physics in oceanography and biomedical and science. CORE aspires to become a world-class center for research and education in the broad field of optical physics. As an innovative platform for optical science, CORE is dedicated to hiring highly experienced world-renowned senior scientists as well as promising young researchers. At present, CORE has 21 faculty members (PIs), including 4 Chair professors and one member of Chinese Academy of Science, 3 tenured full professors, 3 tenured associated professors, and 5 tenure-track associate/assistant professors. CORE plans to significantly expand its faculty body and research facilities. It will provide ample research funds for senior scientists, and abundant research opportunities for young scientists in the broad field of optical physics, with the promise of a productive and dynamical environment and culture.
